A course of 10 to 12 treatments is usually required with the procedure suitable for men and women on all areas of the body, including face and neck. The effectiveness of IPL will depend on your skin type and tone.
What is Intense Pulse Light hair removal?
Well for one thing IPL therapy doesn’t involve lasers, although many people assume IPL hair removal will involve lasers it really isn’t that dangerous. Instead it involves applying harmless light pulses to the surface of the skin over the treatment area. We use these beams of light to quickly target the bulbs of the hair follicles and break down the melanin within.
Melanin is what gives your skin and hair its pigmentation. When IPL hair removal targets this it stops the hair from producing excess amounts of melanin.
At the same time as this IPL hair removal method also heats the rest of the hair strand too, and breaks down the active hairs. In reality this doesn’t actually remove the hair. What it does instead is reduce the amount of active hairs and discolour them.
This makes our IPL hair removal a simple and safe method to tackling your unwanted hair.

What to expect at your IPL consultation
We want to ensure that your IPL treatment is as comfortable as possible. To do this before the treatment begins we provide a free patch test and IPL consultation between yourself and one of our expert technicians.
This begins with paperwork, page one and two to be completed by the client prior to the consultation and the remainder by the technician as the consultation questions are answered. A more in depth explanation of the IPL hair removal process ensures you perfectly understand what to expect. Once you have had all your questions satisfactorily answered, our highly experienced technicians will apply a skin test to your inner wrist rather than to the area to be treated. The wrist is ideal as, generally, it doesn’t have hair and is sensitive – we are carrying out a skin test to make sure there is no adverse reaction.
If no symptoms of irritation or reaction occur during a 48 hour time frame, we will proceed with your first IPL hair removal session.
This consultation and patch test are all provided free of charge by us. It is offered because we are certain you will be assured of our professionalism and empathy in making sure that our hair removal treatment is right for you.
During the consultation session one of our skilled technicians will rank your skin type according to the Fitzpatrick scale. This scale is how the colour of the skin is classified and gives us a clear indication of what level the machine should be set at to treat you accurately. Tanned skin cannot be treated, the ideal length for hair is 1-2mm and this needs to be shaved.
To further ensure your safety, the process begins at a very low level and, with input from the client, the levels are gradually increased.
We do all this to reassure you that our IPL hair removal is not painful and that you are totally happy to proceed.

Your IPL Hair Removal Treatment
After a successful patch test and consultation with one of our technicians, you can book your first IPL session.
We begin our treatment by cleaning the area and applying a cooling gel before our IPL handset is introduced to the skin. The treatment will start at the level at which the patch test was carried out. The handset emits light and heat to the skins surface, which penetrates the top layers of the skin and breaks down the bulb of the hair follicle below. It will then take an average of 7-10 days for the hair to grow and fall out naturally.
IPL hair removal is highly effective against growing hairs and does not get rid of those follicles that have yet to take root. For this reason we recommend 10-12 sessions at intervals of 4-6 weeks.
Dependent on the body area and skin tone, results can show after the very first session.
All of our technicians at The Zap Experience are qualified to NVQ Level 4 specifically in Laser/IPL and are also CRB certified.
